The Phelps County Community Foundation was founded in 1976 through the generosity and foresight of Mrs. Irene Anderson. Prior to 1974, Mrs. Anderson established a trust fund which stipulated that a community foundation be established within five years of her death. Because of her strong affection for Phelps County, Nebraska, Mrs. Anderson wanted to create a community foundation to support the area’s educational, cultural, recreational, health and human service needs, as well as civic opportunities.

Since 1976, the Phelps County Community Foundation has grown from $300,000 to over $14 million dollars in charitable funds. Through the generosity of more than 4,000 donors, the Foundation has awarded over $6 million dollars in grants to support charitable projects and programs within Phelps County, Nebraska. In addition, the Foundation has awarded over $1 million dollars in scholarships to support the educational endeavors of area youth.

Today, the Foundation serves as Phelps County’s premier resource for charitable giving. The Foundation’s work to enhance the quality of life in Phelps County is a legacy to the vision and giving spirit of Mrs. Anderson.
